All digital printing has one thing in common - producing a printed image directly from a digital file and, while direct-imaging systems are included in this definition, they are typically used on offset presses with computer-to-plate technology at the press.

In traditional printing, every sheet is reproduced from the same image so that every copy looks the same. Digital printing however, produces each page by re-imaging it, meaning every page can be different and therefore customized for each recipient.

With the varied digital printing presses - Xerox, IBM, and Xeikon - at our facilities, we are able to handle fully personalized (100% variable data) pieces, or we can overprint data and images on pre-printed shells. The quality of overprinting can range from 240 DPI ink jetting to 600 DPI laser imaging. We can produce 100% variable pieces in four-color process using the Xeikon digital print engines.

On-demand printing and fulfillment requires a flexible, responsive and scalable combination of equipment and people. RR Donnelley provides this combination in its facilities throughout the country. With a networked communications infrastructure and quality processes in place, we can receive data in all common formats, manipulate the files and data sets, perform segmentation and mailing sortation, and distribute data for production to the various sites. Each site has printing capabilities combined with a warehouse and a full array of finishing, binding and mailing capabilities. All systems utilized for production work are backed up on a daily basis and provisions exist for both on-site and off-site storage. "Hot-site" contracts are in place for our on-line, real-time inventory management systems and Internet services.
